The word that comes to my mind as I start my day is OBEDIENCE. Obedience is the act or habit of obeying; compliance with a command, prohibition, or known law and rule prescribed; submission to authority. – Webster Dictionary
My devotional reading this morning was Leviticus Chapter 10. To be honest I didn’t want to read Leviticus. In my mind I wanted to skip right over what I was feeling was the “old” ways of doing things. and read what I thought would be more interesting in the Bible. However, I heard a voice say nope slow down you need this today.
If your not familiar with the Bible or haven’t spent time reading Leviticus then I would encourage you to read it. In Leviticus chapter 10, it speaks of two individuals who knew all the laws and requirements of the people from the Lord.
As a matter of fact, Nadab and Abihu were sons of a high priest Aaron and they also had important roles and were to be an example to the people.
Nadab and Abihu decided that they were not going to follow Gods command. They chose to be disobedient and do what they wanted and as a result, they immediately lost their lives.
The message that resonated with me this morning after reading this was, how often I have neglected to obey and answer the calling or follow the direction that God has for me.
How about you, are you following the calling in your life? You may not be because you have no idea what your calling is. Therefore, you might start by asking yourself:
Am I being obedient to the truth that God has shown me up to this point in my life?
Unfortunately, there have been many times I haven’t and have suffered much for it. Obedience to what is good and noble brings about harmony in all areas of our lives. There are many times in the Bible that the word obey is used.
The very first time that it is used is in Genesis 22:18, “And in thy seed, all nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice”. Did you read that? There is a blessing in obeying!
Now please understand that I am well aware that there are wicked and sick people in our world. And what I am discussing here does not apply to those who use obedience or obey in an abusive nature. Remember the scripture says that:
“Obedience brings about blessings”
And there is no blessing in being in bondage and called into obedience from the hands of an oppressor, who is verbally and or physically abusive. Therefore, if this is you please, by all means, remove yourself from that situation immediately.
There are people who care for you and will help you escape from an abusive environment.
I heard somewhere a long time ago that the Bible was an acronym for Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. There are many examples provided in the Bible where the children of God did not receive the blessings that He desperately wanted to give them because of their disobedience.
Granted receiving all the blessings that God has stored up for us should not be the only reason we want to obey, it’s an important factor in loving Him. His word says clearly, “if you love me keep my commandments”. John 14:15
God is also extremely long suffering and merciful and understands are weakness, and that in our own strength we struggle and fail to obey.
But He doesn’t leave us to tackle it alone. He promises to give us His strength and spirit to obey, and all we have to do is just ask.
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. – 2 Corinthians 12:9
What this scripture says to me, is that when we feel weak or powerless that never should we rest in the spirit of defeat. No, quite the contrary, we should be of good cheer because it is Gods strength in whom we should trust and rely on to claim the victory in our lives.
Talking to God is like talking to a trusted friend. Be honest and open when reaching out and communicating with Him.
Spend time in prayer, and ask God to reveal to you in what areas of your life are you not being obedient to what He would have you do. Which in turn does not bring honor to Him; and possibly slow down the process of you’re personal growth and receiving some of the many blessings that He is so eager to bestow upon you.
