The Benefits Of Waking Up Early In The Morning

Benefits of waking up early

What are mornings like for you?  What would you like mornings to be like for you?  If asked this question in the morning, I would bet that many would say that they are too tired, to discuss their early morning routine.

Imagine me waking up, still tired, pulling back the covers and thinking I just want to stay in bed.  If you are shocked or disappointed, it’s ok.  I’m mature enough to admit that I have missed most early sunrises for my entire life; nevertheless, I am all the more determined to make a strong effort to change my current state of existence.

*Thank God for another day don’t waste it”

As I walked past my kitchen window this early morning I quickly glanced outside.  I hesitated then stopped, sorta like the times when you suddenly remember something that you were meaning to do earlier.

But it wasn’t that I remembered something at all!  Those neuron sensors that communicate within my brain, had reached their destination, and it suddenly dawned on me when I thought, WAIT!

What was it that I just saw, and why was I treating this moment with so little significance?  I stepped back to the window and peered out again, and oh what a beautiful vision that was set before me.  I am going to call it God’s painting, his early morning canvas in the sky.  Yes, it was a sunrise coming up over the horizon.

When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive…”– Marcus Aurelius

I thought I needed to take a picture, so I quickly grabbed my cell phone and hurried to the front door.  Opened the door and as I was welcomed with the cold crisp air from outside, I raised my phone camera and took a picture.

The sunrise with its different shades of blues, pinkish-orange tones, and hues of bright yellow right before me.

The scene immediately reminded me of my devotion.  In fact, did you know that the word morning is mentioned 214 times in the KJV version of the bible?   With being mentioned so many times there must be something to this concept of rising early in the morning,  right?

There are several early patriarchs who have been mentioned rising up early to meet with Lord.  Psalms 5 is beautiful morning prayer.  God’s servant David prays “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord, in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up” Psalm 5:3.  I really believe that it was a practice of Jesus to rise up very early in the morning.  It is written that “…in the morning, rising a great while before day, he went out and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed” Mark 1:35.

God doesn’t sleep he will meet us anytime in the morning we are willing!  A few years ago, I made a commitment to wake up every morning at 3:00 am to meet with the Lord for 30 days.  That was my appointment with Jesus every morning.

Please understand that this experience is one that I will talk about forever.  Jesus spoke to me as a friend and revealed some deep-rooted things in my life that I had to let go of.  He was also always on time and woke me up every morning at 3:00am without me having to set an alarm!

There are several other practical benefits to waking up early in the morning.  In an article entitled Benefits of Waking Up Early I found that through research, studies have found that waking up early in the morning allows you to be more productive, reduce stress and experience better sleep quality.

Most depictions of how we see someone getting up in the morning on the big screen is of them crawling or falling out of bed, sometimes hungover, or just grossly tired from the day before.  Moaning and groaning as they peel themselves out of bed to face the day.

*I love the smell of possibility in the morning”

I believe this picture has brainwashed some of us into believing that this is normal.  Please believe me when I say this is not normal!

There are many who get it and have experienced their aha moment and therefore; are reaping the rewards of waking up early to meet the rising sun as it makes its glorious appearance.

Allowing the morning air to kiss their face as they take a brisk walk/run, or maybe step outside their front door, take a deep breath, stretch their arms up to the sky and give thanks for another day to create memories for tomorrow.

There is a beautiful song that I thought of this morning, an old American Negro Spiritual named “Give Me Jesus”. The first part says:

In the morning when I rise
In the morning when I rise
In the morning when I rise

Refrain:
Give me Jesus

Give me Jesus
Give me Jesus
You can have all this world
Just give me Jesus.

This is just a portion of the song but as you listen to the rest of the lyrics of this song you must also note the struggle and pain of slaves during this time period.  As they rose early in the morning possible under the drudgery of the known hardships that lie ahead this song was born.

This song to me is evidence that giving praise to Jesus in the early morning hours was a practice and understood to be necessary and beneficial in the areas of strength, spiritual awakening, and growth.

I had this song in my head as I got up early last week. I find getting up before my kids gives me some quiet “me” time to spend with God and get some work done. I’m no 3am riser, I aim for around 6:30.
